An expert on music education, Andrea Strauss strives to employ her knowledge in
a number of realms. Strauss earned a Bachelor of Music as well as a Master of
Music Education from the University of South Carolina and went on to obtain a
PhD in the topic from The University of Southern Mississippi. Dedicated to
sharing her knowledge with musicians of all backgrounds, Andrea Strauss holds
almost three decades experience in instructing students of all ages. Previously, she
served as an Associate Professor and Director of Bands at Shorter University,
where she led the wind ensemble, chamber orchestra, and marching band.
Additionally, Strauss led the implementation of a new
instrumental music education degree, for which she organized curriculum, obtained
resources, and hired adjunct faculty.
Andrea Strauss also exercises her talents as Conductor of Tara Winds, a local adult symphonic group that showcases
prominent local instrumental musicians. Before being appointed to Conductor, she
played clarinet with the ensemble for 20 years. Talented at uniting a group of
artists into a vision, Strauss holds a number of honors for her efforts.
An accomplished musician and conductor alike, Andrea Strauss holds the
Women Band Directors International Scroll of Excellence, the Georgia Institute
of Technology Outstanding Faculty for Education and Practice Award, and the
National Band Association Citation of Excellence. Throughout her career, Strauss
has been involved in noted musical events, including the China Shanghai
International Arts Festival, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York
City, and President Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Parade. Andrea Strauss resides in
Marietta, Georgia, and contributes to the Christian Foundation for Children and
Aging. Prior to joining Shorter University, Strauss filled the position of
Assistant Professor and Director of Bands at Georgia Institute of Technology for
more than 15 years.
